He was born on 17 March 1986 in Sarajevo, Bosnia.He spent his youth in the Željezničar academy, where the player trained till 2003, when joined the first team.In 2003 Edin signed his first contract with Željezničar. Till 2005 Džeko took part in many games of the club, making 40 appearances and scoring five goals during two years.In 2005 Džeko was offered to sign a contract with FK Teplice. Everything was arranged for a long term, but Edin skipped the first season in the new club being sent on loan to Ústí nad Labem. Džeko made 15 appearances for the temporary club and netted 16 goals by the end of his loan spell. After returning to Teplice, Edin started to play as a regular, took part in 43 games and found the net six times.
